Curriculum Intent, Implementation and Impact

History Intent

Our teaching of History will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. We aim for it to inspire pupils’ curiosity about the past and to know more about the past. We aim to enable children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. Through the teaching of History we endeavour to teach children to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

History Implementation

Our History curriculum is carefully sequenced to demonstrate progression and to allow the pupils to build on their prior knowledge and skills. Key features include:

Curriculum Design: We utilise a progressive curriculum that builds upon prior knowledge and facilitates connections between different historical periods and themes. The curriculum ensures coverage of the National Curriculum expectations while allowing for in-depth exploration of significant historical content.

Interactive Learning: We incorporate a range of engaging and interactive learning experiences, such as role-play, historical re-enactments, and visits to local historical sites and museums. These initiatives promote experiential learning, enabling pupils to immerse themselves in the past.

Assessment and Feedback: Formative assessment strategies, including self-assessment and peer assessment, are employed regularly to monitor progress and understanding. Tailored feedback is provided to help pupils identify their strengths and areas for development in historical understanding.

History Impact

Pupils are confident historians with a strong understanding of the past of Britain and the wider world and the History curriculum inspires our pupils to become independent and curious about the past. Pupils  identify how British culture and life has been shaped throughout history by influences from over the world. By the end of Year 6, pupils will have a secure understanding of the similarities and differences between British and world history. Using subject specific vocabulary, pupils are able to talk about their learning, historical understanding and can make connections, contrasts and identify links over time and across time periods.  The History curriculum improves judgement and decision-making, develops a sense of chronology and provides the pupils with a sense of identity. Pupils exhibit increased awareness of diversity and cultural heritage, contributing to their development as informed global citizens who respect and appreciate the richness of various histories and cultures.
